Chapter 17: How Cliché

As Jade stepped out of the mist, she found herself squinting through the darkness. There was an uneasy still all around her, and it set her on edge. She slowly crept forward, dodging branches and stems in her path. She heard a noise behind her and turned quickly to check for its origin, when a leaf brushed her bare side, sending a shiver up her spine. Surprised by the sensation, she looked down to find she’d been unwittingly stripped of her weapons and armor and shuddered to think what might come next.

Another crackling twig sent her spinning about, hoping to discover the source of the sounds. Her paranoia was at an all-time high, as she well knew her current challenge would likely be the most difficult and deadly. Ever the protector, she was also worried about her friends and how they might be getting along. She hated not being there to help them and cringed at the thought they might not all make it out alive. She’d never be any use to them again if she was dead though, so she put the menacing thoughts aside to focus on her own predicament.

Inching her way around the landscape, she heard more and more noises indicative of the fact she wasn’t alone. She could see movement in her peripheral vision, but nothing was there by the time she could shift her gaze. Her nerves were frazzled, and she knew she had only just begun. Death was coming for her, but she had no idea what it looked like or how she could possibly fight it. Weaponless, her only solace was found in the knowledge that she was highly skilled in hand to hand combat.

In the distance, she finally set her sights on the silhouette of a tall, slender man. “Hello? Is someone there?” He stopped, the glint of his eyes shining across the darkened plain. A beam of light glanced across his face, illuminating a disturbingly wide smile. “Who is it?” she asked, desperate for an answer.

Leaves rustled behind her, and she spun around to find a similar vision several yards away in the opposite direction. This man, on the other hand, was much shorter and had a bit more weight on him. Looking around nervously, she began to notice more and more ominous figures appearing. She stood frozen as the shadowy men moved closer and closer, and it wasn’t long before she could make out their faces. They weren’t strangers at all; they were the men she had overseen in the dungeon. What were they doing in the forest, though?

“Richard? Benjamin? Andrew? What are you guys doing out here?” It suddenly dawned on her how few of their names she could remember. Her answer came in the form of silence. “What’s going on? Why are you here?” They still refused to speak, but continued to move closer. “You’re scaring me. Say something… please?” she begged. Her fear seemed to inspire their smiles to grow even wider.

Soon, they had surrounded her.
